Rematch date and location for Chris Eubank Jr vs Conor Benn are identified as discussions advance
Gear Up for Round Two: Eubank Jr vs Benn Rematch Potentially on September 27
After a scorching 12-round war at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last month, Chris Eubank Jr's victory over Conor Benn via unanimous decision has ignited talk of a rematch.
The sequel to this high-stakes bout seems to be on the horizon, with promoter Eddie Hearn hinting at a potential date of September 27, 2025, at the former battlefield itself.
"Yep, September 27th, back at Spurs, is a date that's been floated and suggested," Hearn shared with Sky Sports. "We're all set and ready to go. We signed a contract for two battles, and Conor's raring to give it another go."
Eubank Jr's victory marked his return to the ring after a 14-15 month hiatus, and while both parties agreed to a two-fight deal, the comeback fight tested a new weight class for Eubank Jr.
The initial plan had this second-generation grudge match taking place in October 2022. However, the event was cancelled just 48 hours before the opening bell, following Benn's positive test for the banned substance comifene in two pre-fight drug tests.
Subsequent investigations led to a provisional suspension by the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC), but Benn continued to fight under a US license following a brief suspension lift in July 2023. The suspension was reinstated in May 2024, but the National Anti-Doping Panel (NADP) subsequently cleared Benn, paving the way for a rescheduled fight on British soil.
Amidst the controversy, Eubank Jr adjusted the weight terms for the second fight from the initially agreed 157lbs catchweight to the 160lbs middleweight limit. However, Benn, who's never fought above super welterweight (154lbs), was granted a 10lbs rehydration clause to even the playing field.
In a surprising turn, Eubank Jr missed the 160lbs limit by just half an ounce, resulting in a £375,000 fine. Yet, he managed to make weight for the second day weigh-in, despite appearing gaunt on the scales, causing health concerns.
As the drama unfolds, it seems that the same weight terms will apply for the rematch, with both fighters eager to step back into the ring and settle their scores once more.
