In a shocking turn of events, the Israeli army alleges that the remains of Hamas' military commander, Mohammed al-Sinwar, have been discovered. The cadavers were unearthed in an intricate underworld tunnel under the European Hospital in Khan Yunis, southern Gaza, according to a statement. TheIsraeli Defense Forces (IDF) reported that al-Sinwar and the commander of the Rafah Brigade, Mohammed Sabaneh, were lost in an ambush on May 13 [year]. They were rumored to have been holed up in an underground headquarters of Hamas, the Islamic Resistance Movement.

Upon further inspection of the tunnel, items once belonging to the two militants were found, albeit the army’s statement doesn't elaborate on the items. "The bodies of other militants were uncovered during the operation, the identities of which are currently under investigation," read the statement.

Tunnel in the Shadows

IDF provided a sneak peek of the deep, clandestine tunnel to selected journalists today, a German Press Agency photographer included. The tunnel was nestled close to the clinic and buried several feet underground. The floor was scattered with blankets, hinting at a sleeping quarter. The space was damp, and worms were crawling all over the filthy floor. No technological devices or such paraphernalia were visible.

Israel has long been vocal about Hamas' misuse of medical facilities for military operations, accusations which Hamas consistently dismisses. Just recently, the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, affirmed in parliament that Mohammed al-Sinwar was no more. Nevertheless, Hamas has yet to authenticate his death.

This was the brother of the former Hamas leader, Jihia al-Sinwar, also lost to Israeli military strikes. Following the Israeli military's assassination of Hamas military chief Mohammed Deif last year, al-Sinwar took over the helm of Hamas' armed wing, the so-called Qassam Brigades.
