Remains of a deceased person discovered in Atyrau region
Discovering the Past in Turgizba, Atyrau Region
In the heart of the Zhyloy District, a startling discovery was made in the village of Turgizba - a human skull unearthed in a quarry, or perhaps carried by the water, as some say. But there's more to this tale.
The locals argue that the area near Akkudyqieldy is home to an ancient cemetery, slowly encroached upon by the growing village over time. This seemingly isn't an unusual occurrence, as they explain that children occasionally discover human bones from this old, unmarked burial ground. The cemetery is now securely fenced off, preventing further discoveries.
The district akimat confirmed the finding and attributed it to the unmarked areas of the cemetery where burials took place in the past. With the cemetery now contained, such findings may still occur, serving as reminders of the area's history.
Last year, human remains were uncovered during construction projects in both the Mahambet and Kurmangazin districts of Atyrau Region. Regarding the skull and bone fragments discovered in Kurmangazin, the regional prosecutor's office planned to close the case due to the absence of a criminal offense. In Mahambet, a pre-trial investigation was instigated after 26 bone and 12 skull fragments were discovered.
Further investigation revealed that there once existed an ancient settlement called Saraiyshik on the banks of the Ural River in the Mahambet district. During the Middle Ages, a large cemetery was located there, offering an explanation for the discovered remains. Traditional burials were planned for these remains.
Historically, this region has played a crucial role as a crossroads of Eurasian nomadic civilizations. The arid landscape, though unforgiving, has preserved organic materials like leather, textiles, and wooden artifacts exceptionally well, offering glimpses into the lives of ancient communities that once inhabited the area.
Whether you're intrigued by the region's rich history or curious about the ongoing discoveries happening in Turgizba and beyond, the story of these past communities continues to unfold.
