The chilling series of murders that haunted the close-knit community of Sontheim on the Brenz for nearly two decades seems to have finally reached a resolution.

Bolzano/Sontheim - After almost two decades, the whereabouts of the third victim in the gruesome murder series in the small town of Sontheim on the Brenz, located along the Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria border, remained shrouded in mystery. A recent revelation now makes it clear that a headless body discovered in South Tyrol in 2008 belonged to a young man - the son-in-law of the primary suspect. The Ellwangen Public Prosecutor's Office confirmed the confirmation upon request.

The crimes took place in 2008, 2014, and 2019, according to the Public Prosecutor's Office. The victims included the son-in-law, another partner of the daughter of the main suspect, and a garage owner.

Life Imprisonment for Perpetrator

The 55-year-old Italian citizen was sentenced to life imprisonment with preventive detention in 2019 and 2020 by the Ellwangen regional court for two counts of murder and manslaughter. His two sons, who served as complicities, are currently imprisoned.

According to the court, the family fatheralways committed his crimes in the same manner: First, he strangled his victims, dismembered them using chain saws, and disposed of two of the three bodies in Italy.

He was convicted of killing the garage owner in 2019, out of greed; the Turkish son-in-law in 2008, because he did not fit into the Italian family; and his daughter's new partner in 2014, allegedly due to physical abuse.

DNA Comparison Brings Clarity

During an interrogation in 2019, the man admitted to the crimes. However, he later denied the murder of his son-in-law during the trial. Due to the body's inability to be found at the time, this crime was classified as manslaughter. No new indictment will be made, according to the Ellwangen Public Prosecutor's Office. The man cannot be convicted twice for the killing of his son-in-law, as stated by a spokesman.

A Mystery Solved

The headless body of the young man was found by two workers in a box near Klausen on the Brenner motorway in South Tyrol - and remained an unresolved mystery until now. A DNA comparison brought it to light. The head of the man has yet to be found.
