Remains discovered in Rocky Mountain National Park during extensive hunt for vanishing 23-year-old individual
In a tragic turn of events, the body of 23-year-old Blake Kieckhafer, a hiker from Omaha, Nebraska, has been recovered in Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP). Blake was reported missing on Monday, August 11.
The search operations, which involved over 80 people, focused on the Emerald Lake area in RMNP. Recovery operations took place by helicopter, as the terrain is remote and rugged.
Blake was last seen on August 7 in the Upper Beaver Meadows area of RMNP. However, he was dropped off by a car-sharing service in the park, suggesting he may have ventured off his intended route.
The Larimer County Coroner's Office is now working on obtaining positive and scientific identification via DNA. Identification will be made once the next of kin is informed.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of proper preparation for overnight hikes in RMNP. For such trips, it is recommended to carry essential equipment such as a sturdy backpack (60-70+ liters for multi-day trips), a tent or shelter, a sleeping bag rated for cold temperatures (around -5°C or lower), and a sleeping pad for insulation and comfort.
Other crucial hiking gear includes supportive hiking boots or trail shoes with good traction, a reliable headlamp for early starts or night navigation, enough water and a filtration system, sun protection, bear spray, a first aid kit, a map, compass or GPS device, trekking poles, fire starters/matches, and a Swiss Army knife.
To avoid incidents like this, it is essential to inform others of your itinerary and expected return time, have knowledge of the route and current weather conditions, carry emergency contact and navigation tools, be physically prepared and aware of altitude effects, avoid hiking alone, and prepare for rapid weather changes.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Blake Kieckhafer during this difficult time. For more information about the search for Blake, you can refer to the full news release at this link.
