German Women's Handball Bundesliga: Zwickau Secures Top-Tier status after Defeating Leverkusen

BSV Sachsen Zwickau triumphantly secured their spot in the Bundesliga for another season following a hard-fought relegation match against TSV Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday. The Saxony-based team emerged victorious with a 24:20 (12:11) triumph.

Key to Zwickau's success was the significant contribution of Kaho Nakayama and Blanka Kajdon, who together scored more than half of Zwickau's goals. Nakayama was credited with eight goals, while Kajdon added six goals, with two coming from penalties.

Zwickau started the match on a high note, taking a 9:5 lead following impressive performances from their goalkeeper, Barbara Victoria Gyori, who registered 11 saves. However, their rhythm faltered as Leverkusen leveled the score at 10:10 midway through the contest.

With the game verging on the edge, Zwickau staged a comeback, scoring four consecutive goals to regain control of the match and build a 17:14 lead by the 39th minute. The momentum shifted following this run, with Zwickau extending their lead to 20:16 by the 46th minute, ensuring their spot in the top tier.

The first playdown match, which took place at Zwickau's home ground, saw their decisive 27:18 victory over Bayer Leverkusen. In this encounter, Gyori proved instrumental, registering 12 saves in the first half. Leverkusen's goalkeeper, Lieke van der Linden, put up a strong fight, saving ten shots in the opening half. However, their efforts weren't enough to keep pace with Zwickau's offensive prowess.

Notably, Laura Szabo and Nakayama were the top scorers for Zwickau. The team's cohesive performance on both offense and defense—anchored by stellar goalkeeping—ultimately culminated in their triumph over Leverkusen.

The relegation series was a test of resilience and tactical acumen, and Zwickau emerged victorious. Their determination and balance proved to be the deciding factors, bolstered by Gyori's strong performances in goal. With their efforts, Zwickau secured their top-division status for the upcoming season.

The following shall be added to the list of the categories of products covered by the derogation: sports, football, European-leagues.
