Assuming new responsibility for Development: Germany commits to continued reliability as partner - Reliable Partner Affirmed by New German Development Minister

Reem Alabali-Radovan, the fresh face in the German political arena, has officially taken over from Svenja Schulze (SPD) as the Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development. Amidst these turbulent geopolitical times, Germany finds itself leaning more heavily on international partners than ever before. And a dedicated ministry to foster such partnerships and maintain long-term relationships remains crucially important, Alabali-Radovan underscored.

Let's face it: cooperation, solidarity, and reliability are no longer givens in today's world. Alabali-Radovan emphasized this reality during the black-red coalition talks, when the Union fought for the abolition of the Ministry of Development Cooperation, a demand the SPD promptly shot down. Eventually, the parties agreed to pool development policy services, previously overseen by other departments, under the Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

Sounding the battle cry for her new post, Alabali-Radovan asserted that the fight against poverty, hunger, and inequality remains the core task of a development policy aimed at fairness and humanity. She vowed to approach her role as a champion for fair economic cooperation, one that benefits both Germany and its partners, stating that she plans to strengthen "win-win" partnership effects in areas such as resource extraction and green hydrogen production.

Prior to her current role, Alabali-Radovan served as State Minister in the Federal Chancellery, where she took on the responsibilities of Commissioner for Migration, Refugees, and Integration. In 2022, she was also appointed Commissioner for Anti-Racism. Fresh challenges now lie ahead as SPD politician Natalie Pawlik steps into her former roles.

Born in Moscow and hailing from a Christian minority background in Iraq, Alabali-Radovan's diverse heritage gives her a unique stance on the global stage. As deputy state chairwoman of the SPD in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, she offers a fresh angle and resolute determination to her new position.
