New Alien Movie "Alien: Romulus" to Bridge the Gap Between Original Films

Release Details Unveiled for the Upcoming Alien Film's Timeline

In an exciting development for fans of the iconic sci-fi horror franchise, a new Alien movie titled Alien: Romulus is scheduled for release on August 16, 2024. Directed by Fede Álvarez, the film is set to take place in the year 2142, bridging the gap between the original Alien (2122) and its sequel Aliens (2179).

The plot follows a group of young colonists on the dilapidated Jackson's Star colony on planet LV-410 who attempt to escape under dire circumstances after Weyland-Yutani forcibly extends the protagonist Rain Carradine's contract. They hijack a hauler ship, the Corbelan IV, and aim to reach a supposedly idyllic planet, Yvaga III. Along the way, they face the threat of Xenomorphs when a lockdown releases facehugger parasites onto their ship. Tensions rise as Rain’s android brother, Andy, whose loyalty shifts to Weyland-Yutani after reprogramming, complicates their survival.

According to Cailee Spaeny, who stars in the film as Priscilla and made these statements in an interview with Variety this week, the movie is set in a time period between the first Alien movie and the second Alien movie, Aliens. The same team from Aliens, the James Cameron film, is involved in the building of the xenomorphs for this movie. The original design of the xenomorphs will be used, promising a return to the franchise's roots.

While Alien: Romulus is explicitly set in the period after the original Alien but significantly before Aliens, it is not directly connected to the events or content of the 2025 Alien: Earth TV series, which is set in 2120, two years before the original Alien. The two projects were developed separately without crossover elements.

The future of the DC Universe on film and TV, as well as the new Marvel, Star Wars, and Star Trek releases, are also anticipated. The Noah Hawley Alien show, set closer to modern times, is another exciting addition to the Alien universe. However, it appears that Alien: Romulus is expected to stay true to the film's timeline, offering a fresh take on the franchise's classic elements.
