New Anime from the Creator of Sword Art Online
Reki Kawahara's Demon's Crest Anime Adaptation Reveals 2026 Debut
Reki Kawahara, the mangaka behind one of the most iconic and earliest isekai series ever, is bringing his next story to life as an anime—and its premise might sound familiar.
What Kind of Anime Will This Be?
Since 2022, the author has been crafting the world of Demon's Crest, which has already been adapted into a light novel, a webtoon, and a manga. Once again, the plot revolves around young people being pulled into a virtual game:
- Set in 2031, sixth-grader Yuuma Ashihara and his twin sister Sawa participate in the beta test of Actual Magic, the world's first full-dive VR MMORPG.
- After defeating a dungeon boss, Yuuma's avatar is suddenly enveloped in red light, and he loses consciousness. Just like in Sword Art Online, a normal logout is no longer possible.
- When Yuuma regains consciousness, he finds himself in a merged reality where the game and the real world have fused. Once again, the struggle becomes a fight for survival.
Unlike Kirito, the protagonist of Sword Art Online, Yuuma encounters a classmate from the real world—Sumika, the sweetest girl in their class. But in this twisted reality, she has transformed into a terrifying monster.
A first trailer for the anime has already been released.
How Are the Two Anime Connected?
Both series share the core premise: a student is trapped in a virtual world, forced into a life-or-death battle with no way out. They also take place in near-future settings.
As in Sword Art Online, the protagonist of Demon's Crest is reborn in a new world. Sword Art Online was one of the first isekai and a trailblazer for the genre, inspiring countless series—some with increasingly bizarre premises, like a protagonist reincarnated as a vending machine in another world.
When Will It Premiere?
According to the trailer, the anime is set to debut in 2026. Since it wasn't included in the winter or spring lineup, it's likely to premiere in either the summer or fall season.
