Caught Red-Handed Watching Millionaire: Employee's Work-Life Balance Stumbles
If you're René Langen, "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" might as well be your office buddy - until Günther Jauch shakes up your 9-to-5 with an unexpected video call. When work's not enough, this marketing agency employee turns to RTL's TV show for relaxation, but his habit takes a nasty turn in a special episode that plays out live.
After a taste of lunch, Monday post-Pentecost finds René glued to the tellie, engrossed in another episode of his favorite show. His boss, Marei Stanetschek, drops a surprise – setting up a video call between them and host extraordinaire, Jauch. Caught off guard, it takes a few passing seconds for René to realize his world has gone video-conferencing.
"Günther Jauch here, I’m with RTL," the "Millionaire" host greeted, wasting no time with pleasantries. Jauch didn't hold back his criticism, "You can't be watching ‘Millionaire’ at work all the time, do you understand? It's work time, after all." It seems René's coworkers have had enough of his "Millionaire" madness in the office.
Jauch's Surprise Special Strikes Twice
Marei, feeling remorseful, confesses to Jauch that she hadn't realized the extent of René's office antics. The host, taking pity on the aspiring contestant, snatches a second chance from the jaws of defeat - something rarely seen even for zero-euro contestants.
In the meantime, an unlucky contestant, Jannik Kuhle, is waiting in the wings, still reeling from the traumatic end of the Christmas special. Blindsided by a teammate, Stephan Landkammer, Kuhle finds himself stuck with 500 euros. To make amends, Landkammer invites him to a tandem skydiving jump. Upon landing, Kuhle encounters an unexpected surprise – none other than Jauch himself, ready and waiting.
Contestant's Second Chance Goes to Waste
"I was absolutely sure," Kuhle confided as he met the host, seizing the opportunity to compete again. Armed with the tantalizing chance to prepare multiple times, Kuhle still found himself at a loss for knowledge. He struggled with questions involving a Minecraft movie and the Left Party's rescue action, resorting to gambling and nervous father-watching.
In a round of 32,000 euros, Jauch tested Kuhle on Van Gogh or Picasso trading cards in 2023. Overwhelmed, Kuhle decided to log in to the Dutch museum – winning him the jackpot of the night. Two ladies were also fortunate enough to claim 16,000 euros each during the surprise special. Lydia Lachmann initially thought she was a regular viewer at the studio, but her twin daughters had nominated the chronic "know-it-all" for Jauch's hot seat.
Jauch Tattoo: A 15-year Longing Finally Satiated
In another shocking turn of events, Kerstin Fuhrer showcased her loyalty to the show with a large tattoo, emblazoned with an "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" style question promising her an invitation to the show. Frankly, Jauch was astounded by her audacity – finally inviting her to the studio and granting her a consolation prize of 16,000 euros.
As the "Millionaire" finale, Fuhrer struggled with the identity of Maria Riva's famous parent (Marlene Dietrich, not Charlie Chaplin), just barely making it through to the safety net.
As for René Langen, the determined "Millionaire" fan eventually walked away with 16,000 euros of his own. He may not have triumphed like his televisual hero, but the universe of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" will have to wait for another day to see if he can surpass Richard von Weizsäcker in the quest for the grand prize.
