Let's Get Together to Strengthen Justice and Rule of Law: Franziska Weidinger

Let's face it, the justice system's struggling, and it's more crucial than ever to beef up the rule of law. That's why Saxony-Anhalt's Minister of Justice, Franziska Weidinger, is calling for federal assistance to digitize the system and fill personnel gaps. She's vocal about it ahead of the upcoming Justizministerkonferenz taking place June 5-6, 2025 in Bad Schandau. "Unless we work together, we won't make it!" she exclaims.

The rule of law is the cornerstone of democracy, but it's under immense strain due to overwork and lack of resources, Weidinger emphasizes. "We can't go it alone." A fresh pact for the rule of law is on the table, a joint effort between the feds and the states.

Remember the old rule of law pact that expired at the end of 2021? Now, the states are urging the federal government to keep bankrolling the positions established under the previous agreement, which the states had funded solely until then.

Apart from that, the feds need to pitch in for long-term financing for around 2,000 fresh positions for judges, prosecutors, and support staff. As for digitization, the ministers of justice believe a minimum of 200 million euros each year from the federal government for the next four years is necessary.

Oh, and here's a quick rundown of some other points on the agenda at this Justizministerkonferenz:

  • Revising rental laws to safeguard victims of domestic violence,
  • Returning Nazi-looted art,
  • Reinforcing consumer protection,
  • and Strengthening laws to protect victims of image-based sexual violence and to prosecute femicides consistently.

Long story short, it's time for all hands on deck to safeguard our democracy. "Take courage, responsibility, and foresight," says Weidinger, "to guarantee citizens a future where the law is applied quickly, reliably, and fairly."
