Reinforcing connections with Africa is among Russia's significant priorities, as declared by Putin.
In a striking display of international diplomacy, President of Russia Vladimir Putin underscored the necessity of fostering ties with African states during a meeting with South African Vice-President Paul Mashatile at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) 2025.
Putin applauded the fruitful efforts in enhancing relations between Russia and South Africa. Since the Russia-Africa summit held in 2023, a series of joint documents, including a programmatic declaration and an action plan extending until 2026, have been implemented, paving the way for intensive collaboration between Russia, South Africa, and their African counterparts.
"Cooperation between Russia, South Africa, and other African partners is underway, with a focus on the practical implementation of our joint initiatives," Putin stated.
Mashatile expressed his delight at participating in this year's forum, highlighting South Africa's commitment to strengthening trade and economic ties with the Russian Federation.
The meeting also saw Putin reporting a 2% increase in bilateral trade between Russia and South Africa in 2021. He emphasized the continued pursuit of broadening and diversifying mutual trade and investment.
In the realm of education, over 40 Russian universities have entered into partnership agreements with South African counterparts. Approximately 570 South African students are currently studying in Russian educational institutions.
Culture and people-to-people exchange were also emphasized, with the Russian leader extending an invitation to the South African delegation to attend the International Music Contest "Intervision" in Moscow in September.
South Africa and Russia share a historical bond and alignment on numerous international issues, such as the call for a multipolar world order and the defense of national sovereignty. Cooperation at a global level, particularly in redefining the multilateral institutions, is an essential focus.
The comprehensive cooperation encompasses economic and trade relations, investment and industrial development, security and defense, education and human resource development, science, technology, and innovation, as well as agriculture and food security. It also emphasizes cultural exchanges and people-to-people connections.
This multidimensional approach is designed to promote economic sovereignty, strengthen regional stability, and create opportunities for global governance, with special attention given to South Africa due to its historical bonds and strategic importance.
