Iconic Austrian Showmaster Peter Rapp Bids Farewell

Regrettably, television personality Peter Rapp has passed away.

In the land of the Alps, the beloved Entertainment figurehead, Peter Rapp, has taken his final bow at the age of 81. The Wiener Bezirksblatt, an esteemed Viennese newspaper, confirmed his passing, without revealing the precise date of his demise or the reasons behind it; however, they made it clear that his long-standing ordeal has finally come to an end.

Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen mourns the loss of Austria's renowned showmaster, praising Rapp's effortless charm, natural wit, and infectious humor that mesmerized millions of Austrians across TV and radio waves. Van der Bellen, in his eulogy, acknowledges the unique stature Rapp held in the hearts of the Austrian masses, as someone who consistently transcended and connected with the public, even during television’s early days.

Peter Rapp's popularity began in 1963 as an up-and-coming singer and cabaret artist, making his first television appearances on shows like Leute von heute and Teenagerparty. His stardom truly took flight beginning in 1968 when he helmed the music show Spotlight for the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF) until 1978. Known for showcasing international rock stars, Spotlight would prove to be one of Rapp's defining milestones.

In the late '80s, Rapp continued his television reign with shows like Wurlitzer, Hoppala, and the Brieflos-Show. Moreover, he lent his presence as a juror on the ORF talent show Die große Chance and graced the Licht ins Dunkel gala as its host. The latter marked Rapp's philanthropic side, raising funds for charitable causes; an aspect of his career that further endeared him to the Austrian public.

The Man Behind the Beard

With his iconic “Henriquatre” beard as a trademark, Peter Rapp dominated the Austrian entertainment scene. His appearance devoid of his signature facial hair led to an outcry from viewers, prompting him to grow it back again the next time he appeared on screen.

Rapp achieved international recognition when he hosted the children's show Babbelgamm for ZDF, Germany's Second Public Television Broadcaster, from 1977 to 1985. Furthermore, he partnered with Carolin Reiber to co-moderate the ZDF game show Tele-As from 1987 to 1991. However, his significant German television work remains less detailed compared to his imprint on Austria's television industry.

Throughout his life, Rapp was married three times, including to the late actress and theater director Sissy Löwinger. His enduring legacy lives on through their three children.
