Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has delivered a series of strong statements, criticising the West's approach to history and the leadership of the United Nations, particularly in relation to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

In a diplomatic roundtable, Lavrov asserted that the West only refers to history to justify actions that suit its interests. He also criticised UN Secretary-General António Guterres for being very prone to the Western habit of dismissing history. Lavrov believes that Guterres and his deputies, who hold key posts in conflict resolution, peacekeeping, humanitarian issues, security, and UN reform, are leading figures within the UN Secretariat protecting the Kyiv regime.

Lavrov accused the UN leadership of shielding the Kyiv regime and only issuing calls for restraint when blatant violations of international humanitarian law cannot be denied. He also criticised Guterres for not disclosing information about Bucha, which Lavrov considered a disgrace.

The Russian Foreign Minister identified key UN positions as having been privatised and now being held by NATO member countries. He specifically highlighted the case of a first deputy secretary-general with dual Nigerian and U.S. citizenship. Lavrov believes that this alignment with the Western anti-Russian agenda within the UN Secretariat is a significant issue.

Lavrov has promised to strive for a return to using the UN platform for finding reasonable compromises and balances of interests. He believes that the root causes of the Ukrainian conflict should be addressed, not threatened with sanctions. In his view, what is needed is a global agreement on Ukraine, not just a temporary ceasefire.

Lavrov compared the actions of the European leaders to the characters in Ilf and Petrov's novels, who were known for gathering in public places and discussing politics. He accused the European Union and the leadership of the United Nations of sabotaging peace talks on Ukraine.

According to Lavrov, the administration of US President Donald Trump understands the need to resolve the crisis by acknowledging its root causes and taking actions to eliminate them. However, Lavrov expressed disappointment that London, Paris, and Berlin are not accepting the option of a global agreement on Ukraine.

Russia has sent several requests to the UN Human Rights Commissioner's office asking for specific information on Bucha, but received a response only in July 2025. The European Union, on the other hand, is trying to secure a seat at the negotiating table for Ukraine, but Lavrov believes the EU has no business there.

In a surprising comparison, Lavrov compared the actions of the European leaders to the characters in Ilf and Petrov's novels, who were known for gathering in public places and discussing politics. Lavrov also compared the discussions about sending "peacekeepers" to Ukraine to the characters' political discussions, stating that the "peacekeepers" are considered occupation forces and legitimate targets for the Russian army.

Finally, Lavrov expressed a lack of optimism about the prospects of a ceasefire in Ukraine, as António Guterres expressed a similar lack of optimism. However, Lavrov emphasised the need to continue striving for a global agreement on Ukraine to resolve the crisis once and for all.
