Regretful demise: renowned film figure Robert Redford passes away
Robert Redford, a two-time Oscar winner and one of the greatest legends of the silver screen, has passed away at the age of 89 in his home in Utah. His death was confirmed by his spokesperson Cindi Berger.
Redford, born in 1936, grew up in humble circumstances and worked his way into the film industry through many detours. He broke through in the 60s with the Western comedy 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.'
Throughout his illustrious career, Redford played his way into the hearts of millions of fans worldwide. At least with the films 'The Great Gatsby' (1974) and 'Out of Africa,' he solidified his status as a beloved actor.
Director Ron Howard thanked Redford for the 'creative decisions' he made and for founding the Sundance Film Festival. The festival, now the largest US film festival for independent productions, was established by Redford in 1980 under the umbrella of the Sundance Institute, which he also founded.
In addition to his acting career, Redford worked as a director from time to time and was involved in environmental activism and nature conservation.
US President Donald Trump paid tribute to Redford, stating that he was 'great' and 'for a time, there was no better' than him. Trump's sentiments were echoed by many in the industry.
Actor Leonardo DiCaprio praised Robert Redford's 'unstoppable commitment to protecting our planet.' Marlee Matlin called Redford a 'genius,' while Meryl Streep expressed her grief over his death, calling him 'my dear friend.'
