"Regretful demise": film legend Robert Redford passes away
Robert Redford, a towering figure in the world of cinema, has passed away at the age of 89 in his home in Utah. His death was confirmed by his spokesperson Cindi Berger.
Redford was considered one of the greatest legends of the silver screen, known for his charisma and versatility as an actor. He made his mark in Hollywood during the 70s and 80s, a period Stephen King described as being part of a new and exciting era.
Redford's career spanned over five decades, during which he worked repeatedly as a director and was committed as an environmental activist and nature conservationist. In 1980, he founded the Sundance Institute in the Rocky Mountains, which has since grown into the largest US film festival for independent productions.
His last major film role before his retirement in 2019 was in "The Old Man & the Gun," where he played the role of Forrest Tucker. He also appeared in a cameo in "Avengers: Endgame," with his last on-screen appearance being in 2019.
Actors and actresses from across the industry paid tribute to Redford upon hearing of his passing. Meryl Streep expressed her grief, calling him "my dear friend." Marlee Matlin referred to him as a genius, while Jane Fonda couldn't stop crying since hearing the news.
Leonardo DiCaprio paid tribute to Redford's commitment to protecting the planet, while director Ron Howard thanked him for the creative decisions he made and for founding the Sundance Film Festival.
Even former President Donald Trump paid tribute to Redford, describing him as "great" and "the hottest" during a certain period. Rosie O'Donnell referred to him fondly as "Hubbell," a character he played in the film "The Way We Were."
According to a statement, Redford died "in the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved." Julianne Moore wrote that he was the first film star she ever loved, while Fonda said he stood for an America that they must continue to fight for.
Piers Morgan lamented Redford's loss, describing his career as what a career, what an actor. Marlee Matlin, Meryl Streep, Jane Fonda, and Julianne Moore are just a few of the many who will miss him dearly.
The Sundance Festival, which Redford founded, will undoubtedly continue to honour his legacy and the impact he had on the world of independent filmmaking.
