Folks, the folks in Moscow have cooked up a whole bunch of changes coming into effect starting next year on May 1, 2025. Buckle up, because it's quite a ride! Let's break it down:

Cracking Down on Foreign Agents

Starting May 1, 2025, the definition for what constitutes a foreign agent will broaden. People who aid in the execution of international organization resolutions where Russia is not a part, those helping foreign government agencies against Russia's security, and those collecting military-technical data that can be used against Russia may be considered foreign agents.

Additionally, judges will be able to prosecute foreign agents under 20 different criminal charges without their presence in court, yes, you read that right. This means we might see some high-profile individuals being tried in absentia!

Recognizing War Veterans

Military personnel, law enforcement officers, and volunteers in paramilitary units who defended Russia from armed invasions will be granted veteran status starting May 1, 2025. According to government reports, this recognition will officially acknowledge their sacrifice and service to the nation.

Labeling Your Snacks

Got a craving for chips, nachos, or popcorn? From May 1, 2025, these tasty treats, along with cookies, crackers, and certain other ready-to-eat foods, will need to be clearly labeled. This is the first phase of mandatory labeling for packaged foods.

The second phase, starting July 1, 2025, will see condiments, spices, and other packaged foods getting the labeling treatment too. Producers and importers will need to include identifying marks on their products and report details on labeling and their market introduction to the "Honest Mark" system.

Battling Money Laundering

Starting May 30, 2025, Russians will only be able to send a maximum of 100,000 rubles in a single transaction without opening a bank account, as per the anti-money laundering regulations. This limit drops to 15,000 rubles for transactions without identification verification.

Child Support Delinquent Registry

From May 24, 2025, a public child support delinquent registry will be launched and maintained by the Federal Service for Bailiffs. This registry will contain the names, dates of birth, and unpaid child support amounts of those who have been convicted of child support non-payment or are in arrears for child support.

Protecting Personal Data

Starting May 30, 2025, fines for companies that leak personal data will be determined by company size, with fines reaching up to 15 million rubles for large companies. Companies will also face administrative penalties of up to 3% of their annual revenue for repeated data breaches. In addition, there will be administrative penalties for refusing to enter into or execute contracts, providing government services, or providing identification or biometric data.
