Regional trade will significantly boost due to the new partnership, solidifying Lach Huyen Port's position in the region.

In a significant step forward for Vietnam's trade and logistics sector, a strategic partnership has been formed to develop a 200-hectare intermodal freight and logistics estate at Lach Huyen Port in Hai Phong. The joint venture, between XCE Energy Holdings and Goldwind International Vietnam, aims to create Northern Vietnam's first fully integrated, high-tech intermodal gateway.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the Lach Huyen non-tariff, logistics, and industrial zone project took place on May 13. Matthew Jackson, LŌ-GOI's general manager for Northern Vietnam, expressed confidence that the joint venture would accelerate Vietnam's evolution into a high-value trade and supply-chain hub.

The estate, designed to achieve LEED Platinum and EDGE Level 3 (Zero Carbon) green building certifications, will be powered by a 42 MWp rooftop-based solar photovoltaic power plant and a 20 MWh battery storage system, ensuring 100 per cent renewable power coverage.

Meanwhile, the Vietnamese government has approved the construction of four new container terminals at Lach Huyen Port. These terminals, capable of handling container vessels of 12,000 to 18,000 TEUs, will significantly enhance the port's capacity and position Vietnam as a key player in regional trade. The total investment for the four container terminals is approximately VND 24.8 trillion (around $944 million to $1 billion).

The development of Lach Huyen Port is aligned with Vietnam's master plan for seaport development, aiming to boost socio-economic growth in Hai Phong and the northern region by enhancing connectivity with logistics and free trade zones. The port's modern automation and sustainable orientation, along with connections to major shipping lines, will enhance Vietnam's global trade capabilities and reinforce its role as a regional trade hub.

Trent Iliffe, founder and managing director of LŌ-GOI Group, described the project as a "once-in-a-decade, nation-building infrastructure project". The development will cover approximately 70 hectares within the 2,000-hectare Lach Huyen Logistics, Industrial & Free Trade Zone, and will include more than 350,000 square metres of Grade-A warehousing and industrial space.

The LŌ-GOI Group and Lach Huyen International Logistics & Industrial Park - Deepwater Port JSC have also signed an MoU to establish exclusive strategic cooperation for infrastructure development at Lach Huyen Port. Nguyen Vinh Hau, general director at Lach Huyen International Logistics & Industrial Park - Deepwater Port JSC, stated that the partnership would realize their long-held vision for Lach Huyen as an integrated, world-class industrial and logistics destination.

While specific details about Lơ-Gọi Group or Xuan Cau Holdings' involvement in the planned development of Lach Huyen Port are not mentioned, the broader development of Lach Huyen Port is a cornerstone of Vietnam’s strategy to strengthen its maritime infrastructure and reinforce its position in regional trade. The development of the port and the intermodal freight and logistics estate is poised to significantly enhance Vietnam's role as a regional trade hub.

The Lach Huyen Port development, including the intermodal freight and logistics estate, is aimed at being a fully integrated, high-tech gateway that follows sustainable principles, such as striving for LEED Platinum and EDGE Level 3 green building certifications, and harnessing renewable energy through a 42 MWp solar photovoltaic power plant and a 20 MWh battery storage system.

The enhancement of Lach Huyen Port's capacity with four new container terminals capable of handling large vessels, and its strategic alignment with Vietnam's masterplan for seaport development, positions Vietnam as a key player in regional trade, potentially influencing the weather of global trade dynamics in the region.
