Sarawak is taking proactive steps to prepare for the 2027 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, focusing on numerous sports and enhancing its facilities. Here are some salient aspects of their preparations.

In terms of sports, Sarawak plans to host 18 events during the 2027 SEA Games, with events such as bowling, swimming, diving, and cricket set to be included. The state is also looking to refine its strategies by studying the live operations of the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand, with the minister touting this knowledge as a means to ensure a world-class delivery of the biennial event.

With the mission to position Kuching as a significant sports hub, the SEA Games are expected to inspire future athletes and boost the city's global reputation. The minister emphasized that the games will not only showcase Sarawak's prowess in sports but also serve as a stepping stone for the state's bold entry into the international sports arena.

The Sarawak government, private sector, and local community are encouraged to prepare early for the events to ensure their success. The successful hosting of the 21st Malaysia Games (SUKMA) in August last year has built confidence in Sarawak's ability to organize large-scale events, providing a foundation for the state's preparations for the upcoming SEA Games.

To strengthen Sarawak's competitive edge, the Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) is focusing on 14 high-potential sports with strong medal prospects. These sports include golf, taekwondo, bowling, aquatics, boxing, muay Thai, athletics, archery, silat, squash, volleyball, artistic gymnastics, wushu, and lawn bowls. The targeted approach aims to elevate these key disciplines to new levels of excellence and performance, marking a strategic restructuring of the state's sports development programs.

In addition, the state is also planning to host the return of the Borneo Games as part of its preparations, with the aim of refining strategies for the SEA Games. The event will offer valuable experience and insights as Sarawak gears up for the international games in 2027.
