Region of Schleswig-Holstein is countering Islamic extremism threats
In a bold move meant to enhance the safety of the local community, officials in Schleswig-Holstein have deported a 35-year-old individual with suspected Islamist ties to Bosnia and Herzegovina. This is the second time the state has initiated deportation proceedings in the northern region.
Minister of State for Social Affairs Silke Schiller-Tobies (Greens) commended the action, stating, "Our constitutional state is watchful, and the deportation of the detainee is a vital contribution to safeguarding the security of our residents."
The Deportation Process
The deportation was carried out under Section 58a of the Residence Act. This provision allows the highest state authority to order the deportation without previous expulsion if there's a considerable threat to the security of the Federal Republic of Germany or a terrorist danger.
A Broadening Spectrum of Political Crimes
Recent years have seen an increase in political crimes, with Islamism and right-wing extremism being particular concerns in major cities like Hamburg. According to recent reports, there are 1520 violent Islamists residing in the Hanseatic city, highlighting the need for vigilance and proactive measures [2][3].
While the use of Section 58a for deportation has been employed only sparingly, Schleswig-Holstein was reported to have deployed it in January 2018, resulting in the deportation of another individual to Turkey [4].

In light of the growing concern over political crimes, particularly Islamism, the use of Section 58a of the Residence Act for proactive measures, such as deportations, becomes a significant tool in safeguarding general-news and crime-and-justice issues, as demonstrated by the recent deportation of a suspected Islamist in Schleswig-Holstein. The implementation of such policies contributes to the broader effort to combat both domestic and foreign threats to the safety and security of the community.
