Swift Turns in Murcian Politics: López Miras Strikes a Deal with Vox

In an unexpected twist, the President of the Government of the Region of Murcia, Fernando López Miras, has inked a budget deal with the far-right party Vox. This announcement came following a series of meetings at the Palacio de San Esteban with the parliamentary representatives of four parties, including Vox, Podemos, PSOE, and PP.

The objective of these negotiations was to advance in the approval of the public accounts for the current year, which has finally been achieved with the agreement with Vox, who were once a governing partner.

López Miras revealed that the pact with Vox encompasses crucial points such as the rejection of the Green Pact, a commitment to initiate tax cuts and new funds for families. Furthermore, the agreement aims to close the unaccompanied minors center in Santa Cruz and eliminate subsidies to social agents.

After the round of meetings, López Miras addressed the press, praising the "good disposition" of Vox, even though there are disagreements on some matters. He highlighted the common ground between Vox and the Region of Murcia on important issues. López Miras emphasized that the situation in Murcia is starkly different from the central government, comparing it unfavorably to Pedro Sánchez's administration.

José Ángel Antelo, Vox's deputy and president in Murcia, further detailed other key aspects of the agreement. The budget deal also includes the elimination of the subject of Moroccan culture in schools and tax reductions for businesses.

Controversially, the agreement reflects a harder stance towards immigration. López Miras declared that Murcia cannot accommodate more immigrants, particularly minors distributed from the Canary Islands. He bemoaned the lack of a genuine migration policy from the central government, characterizing Murcia as a magnet for human trafficking.

The new Murcian budget amounts to over €6.7 billion, an increase of roughly 3.5%. This funding boost is geared towards strengthening public healthcare, education, and social coverage. Adherence to these budgetary commitments is essential, with Vox reserving the right to demand resignations if targets are missed.

In a turn of events, the PSOE had proposed to support the spending cap to prevent a potential coalition between the PP and Vox. However, Podemos, the regional representative of the purple formation, dismissed the new budget as the "budgets of hatred," disregarding the needs of the 99% of the Murcian population.
