"Regensburg SPD secures second round victory in local elections"

In the upcoming municipal election in Regensburg, a number of changes are afoot within the Social Democratic Party (SPD). Thomas Burger, the party's top candidate, is making waves with his positive approach and focus on the city's strengths, as outlined in a speech that subtly references the Christian Social Union (CSU) and their mayoral candidate, Astrid Freudenstein.

Thomas Burger, a recognisable figure in Regensburg politics, is being backed by a Berlin agency for his campaign, as evidenced by a poster draft proclaiming 'Burger masters it'. However, the road to the top was not always smooth. Initially, Thomas Rudner, another contender, was considered the favourite of the SPD executive board for the 2026 OB (Mayor) election. But Rudner ultimately withdrew from the race, receiving just 6 votes, and was given a seemingly hopeless 21st place on the list.

Rudner's withdrawal leaves Burger as the clear front-runner, but he faces competition from within his own party. Klaus Rappert, Elisabeth Christoph, and Hans Holler are running for the front spots (5, 6, 7), while Andrea Diermeier (position 4), Anna Gmeiner (8), Hung Trieu (9), Bernd Edtmaier (position 19), and Bruno Lehmeier are new faces or recognisable figures running for the SPD.

The Regensburg SPD has presented itself as a united, fighting, and optimistic force. The party claims to be the 'Regensburg party', standing for affordable housing, culture and sports, clean air, and a transport policy that includes everyone. They also emphasise their commitment to supporting the homeless, with Burger stating that more needs to come in this area than just strong words.

Meanwhile, the current mayor, Gertrud Maltz-Schwarzfischer, is running on the 50th place on the list in the municipal election on March 8th. Evelyn Kolbe-Stockert, a current city council member, is stepping down from her position.

Elsewhere in local politics, Bernhard Uhl, the current mayor in Zusmarshausen, has announced that he will not run again there in the municipal election on March 8. Instead, he plans to run as an independent with Green support in Wertingen.

The race for the OB position in Regensburg is heating up, with Thomas Burger and Thomas Rudner agreeing that the loser of the election would get the 3rd place on the list. The outcome of this election could shape the future of Regensburg politics, so stay tuned for updates.
