The Kooks Unleash Their Roots: A Journey Back to Their Indie Charm
Regained Self-Assurance: The Newfound Boost in Confidence
In a heartfelt interview, Luke Pritchard, the enigmatic frontman of The Kooks, shared exclusive stories from the creation of their latest offering, "Never/Know". Known for their blend of pop, rock, and British cool, the band first emerged in 2006 with their chart-topping debut album "Inside In/Inside Out". Since then, they've experimented with various musical territories, but their latest album represents a triumphant return to their roots.
With "Never/Know", The Kooks bare their souls in a bid to rediscover the essence of their music, the magic that once hooked a generation. In a chat with ntv.de, Pritchard divulges tales of wild nights with the charismatic Liam Gallagher, reminisces about the early days of The Kooks, and opens up about the discoveries that led them back to their roots.
ntv.de: Your new album seems like a homage to the roots of your first record. Was this a conscious decision or did it simply materialize naturally?
Luke Pritchard: To explain, this album was truly about creating an auditory expression for our original fans who have followed us since the beginning. Over time, we've evolved and altered our sound, and I felt I'd lost my own musical identity for a while. I've worked with many different songwriters and producers, and one day, I had a spontaneous epiphany while performing "Ooh La" on stage at a festival. I realized, "This is such a straightforward song - why don't I write more like this?", leading me on a musical journey that culminated in "Never/Know".
What was your response to that quest for authenticity?
I started revisiting the artists who initially inspired us - The Police, Bob Marley, Bob Dylan, Eddie Cochran, Buddy Holly. This trip down memory lane allowed me to develop an album that echoed the soulful vibes of our debut in five days, all while recording in my basement. The process brought me back to the simplicity and purity that defined our beginnings.
What do you believe makes debut albums so special?
There are a couple of reasons for this. Firstly, at the outset, there are no preconceived notions, either from the audience or from oneself. Artists are naturally instinctive and unburdened by expectations, ultimately leading to raw, unaffected music. Secondly, artists striving to make a mark rarely have extensive resources, forcing them to practice economically and rely more on melodies and emotions. That's the essence I aimed for in "Never/Know".
Has this direction resonated with your fans, as well?
Yes, I believe so. With nearly 20 years under our belt, it's the perfect time to offer our fans something genuine and enduring; a testament to their support throughout our journey. I've also made a conscious effort to delve deeper into my personal experiences and tap into my emotions, giving the album a profound sense of introspection.
As we emphasize authenticity and individuality, The Kooks carry on their musical odyssey, rediscovering their unique identity and voices. Join us in celebrating this exhilarating return to the heart of their music, the essence that once mesmerized a generation.
