"The Kooks" Finding Their Way Back: "We've Reclaimed Our Confidence"
Regained Confidence Once More
Come take a trip down memory lane with the legendary band, "The Kooks," as they reminisce about their wild past, rediscover their roots, and speak candidly about their latest release, "Never Know."
The Kooks, with frontman Luke Pritchard at the helm, rocketed onto the scene in 2006 and quickly became the millennial generation's favorite, thanks to their distinctive blend of pop, rock, and British cool. Since then, the band has dabbled in various musical territories—electronic, soul, and pop. Yet, they never managed to match the success of their first album, "Inside In/Inside Out."
In an exclusive interview with ntv.de, Pritchard openly shares intimate stories about his wild nights with Oasis star Liam Gallagher, their humble beginnings, rivalries with fellow indie bands, and even the surprising success of questionable song lyrics.
ntv.de: Your new album has you returning to the roots of your first record. Was this a conscious decision or did it simply happen naturally?
Luke Pritchard: To put it simply, I found myself yearning to capture that original spark and genuine connection for the people who have loved The Kooks since the beginning. I confess, I felt I'd lost my musical identity amidst the collaboration with various songwriters and producers. But after an eye-opening moment at a festival, I realized that I needed to get back to the basics—the basics being the influences that initially inspired us. I took a deep dive back into the works of artists like Bob Marley, The Police, Eddie Cochran, Bob Dylan, and Buddy Holly, drawing inspiration that, within five days, gave birth to a brand new album in my basement, all by myself. And voila! The magic was back.
ntv.de: And did you find an answer to that question?
Ireally dug deep into my past and asked myself: Who are The Kooks? What are the elements that make us unique? Ultimately, I wanted to emphasize our identity as a band: Sunshine-Rock'n'Roll, Pop, Rock, and Soul. And now, with authentically crafted songs and a touch of nostalgia, "Never Know" deserves its place among our favorite records.
It's All About the Journey:
Lost in the realm of musical experimentation, The Kooks found themselves yearning for something pure and simple—much like their beginner's mindset when they first started making music in the basement together. The goal was to reclaim the right atmosphere, where everyone could let loose and share their creative energies.
They swapped elaborate studio sessions for humble rehearsals in Brighton, where they used to practice with excitement and enthusiasm, fuelling the energy that carries their music to this day. This return to their roots helped rekindle their musical love affair, shoring up their confidence and renewing their passion.
Your Fans Will be Thrilled:
The Kooks are offering their long-time fans something heartfelt with "Never Know." It's a testament to staying true to themselves and their fans, reminding everyone that sometimes going back to the beginning is the best way to move forward.
Undoubtedly, "Never Know" will entice newcomers and make dedicated fans joyously nostalgic, offering a taste of what initially brought them together—and showcasing that they're still very much The Kooks.
