Refugee encampment disbanded: Some residents relocate to Gadebusch

In the County of North West Mecklenburg, several changes are taking place in the refugee accommodation landscape.

The community accommodation in Gadebusch, set to open next week, is one of the key developments. This facility, consisting of 78 living containers and capable of housing up to 146 people, is currently under construction. The construction began on July 4, 2025, with earthworks starting on the 10th.

Another significant development is the creation of a container village in Gadebusch, which will accommodate around 100 refugees, as expected by the Mayor of Gadebusch. This comes as part of the redistribution of refugees from Upahl, where the community accommodation is being dissolved.

The property in Upahl, previously used for refugee accommodation, will be sold to an investor, ending the use by the state and county. County Commissioner Tino Schomann has mentioned that jobs will be created on this property. The remaining containers in Upahl will be dismantled, and the building permit expiration in October will cease any use of the property by the state and county.

Refugees from Upahl are being relocated to new facilities in Gadebusch and Selmsdorf. Selmsdorf, too, has a new community accommodation with a capacity of up to 100 people.

It's worth noting that the community accommodations in Wismar, Warin, and Kitzow, along with Gadebusch and Selmsdorf, remain fully occupied, despite a decrease in the number of refugees compared to 2023. As of July 2025, the occupancy rate of these accommodations in the County of North West Mecklenburg is over 75%.

Final safety inspections are taking place at both the Gadebusch and Selmsdorf community accommodations this and the following week. The construction of the container village in Gadebusch is ongoing, with inspections ensuring the safety and readiness of the facilities for the incoming residents.

These changes reflect the ongoing efforts to manage and accommodate the needs of refugees in North West Mecklenburg, ensuring a safe and secure environment for all.
