Refugee Center Expands in Munich, Providing Shelter for 900 Asylum Seekers
In a significant development, Bavaria's capital, Munich, is set to establish an "anchor center" for accommodating asylum seekers. The new center, located on Garmischer Street in western Munich, formerly a hotel, will serve as the first point of contact for new asylum seekers in the Upper Bavarian government district.
The anchor center, a concept first introduced in Bavaria in 2018, is designed to provide optimal conditions for the orderly registration of asylum seekers. It includes modern arrival facilities, short-term accommodation, and administrative offices.
The center, which can accommodate up to 900 residents across 11 floors, boasts 328 rooms. Residents will be fed through a central catering service in the dining hall. The building also houses sanitary facilities, laundry facilities, recreational rooms, prayer rooms, offices for administration, and a clothing chamber to provide basic equipment for new arrivals.
The new center offers a comprehensive range of facilities to ensure the comfort and well-being of its residents. These include recreational rooms, prayer rooms, and a 24/7 security service to ensure safety and security.
The announcement of the new anchor center in Munich was made by Bavarian Prime Minister, Markus Söder, in a keynote speech. Söder emphasised the need for Munich, being the state capital and one of Germany's largest cities, to engage more in accommodating refugees due to its size and population.
While some critics argue that people are isolated in these centers, supporters like Herrmann believe the concept has proven effective for faster and more efficient processing of asylum procedures. Bavaria currently has eight anchor centers, each usually with additional locations, except for Upper Bavaria, where there is one per government district.
With the number of asylum seekers in Bavaria significantly decreasing this year, from around 23,000 in the same period last year to approximately 8,900 asylum seekers by the end of August, the introduction of the new anchor center in Munich is a timely move.
The anchor centers in Bavaria serve as "centers for arrival, decision, return," playing a crucial role in managing the influx of asylum seekers and ensuring a smooth and efficient process for all involved.
