Keep It Saucy - Thursday, May 1
Refreshed upscale pasta product line presented by an Italian food business, with members of the Beckham family featured in advertising as spokespeople and brand ambassadors.
Here's the scoop on some tasty news: Barilla, America's top dog in pasta, has given its Al Bronzo line a facelift and expanded the offerings to two new pasta types—Orecchiette and Fusilloni. They didn't just any schmuck to help with the relaunch, though. They went with none other than Brooklyn Peltz Beckham, the food-loving celebrity who's learned to cook from his father, soccer legend David Beckham.
"We're bloody thrilled to have Brooklyn on board," Angie Cotter, U.S. Pasta Marketing Director at Barilla, told FOX Business. "He's always had a mad passion for food and spent his childhood learning how to cook from his old man."
Want to cook like Brooklyn? You're in luck. Here's a recipe for 'The Godfather' Sunday Sauce that's got a hint of Peltz Beckham's influence:
- Sauce Ingredients
- 1/4 cup (60g) extra virgin olive oil
- 1 medium onion, diced
- 5 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 ounces (30g) tomato paste
- 1/2 cup (120g) dry red wine
- 2 cups (475g) San Marzano tomatoes, crushed by hand
- 1 cup (250ml) of vegetable or chicken broth
- Salt, to taste
- Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
- Fresh basil, chopped (for garnish)
- Oregano
- Brooklyn's Additions
- Roasted vegetables like bell peppers, zucchini, or nutritional yeast
Here's how it goes down:
- Prepare the ingredients: Chop the onion and mince the garlic. If you're roasting veggies, preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and roast them until tender.
- Cook the sauce:
- Heat oil: In a large saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat.
- Soften onions: Add the diced onion and cook until it becomes translucent and soft, about 7-10 minutes.
- Add garlic: Add the minced garlic and sauté for another 2 minutes, until fragrant.
- Tomato paste: Stir in the tomato paste and spread it evenly across the pan. Cook for about 5 minutes.
- Red wine: Add the red wine and simmer for 2 minutes, scraping the bottom of the pan to release any browned bits.
- Tomatoes and broth: Add the crushed San Marzano tomatoes and the broth. Mix well, then bring the sauce to a simmer.
- Simmer and season:
- Simmer sauce: Reduce heat to low and let the sauce simmer with the lid slightly ajar for at least 2-3 hours, allowing it to thicken and develop flavor.
- Seasoning: Taste and adjust the seasoning with salt. You can also add some roasted vegetables from step one, if using.
- Cook pasta:
- Boil water: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
- Cook pasta: Cook Barilla Al Bronzo pasta according to the package instructions until it's al dente. Reserve some of the pasta cooking water before draining the pasta.
- Combine and serve:
- Add the pasta to the simmering sauce. If the sauce seems too thick, add some of the reserved pasta water.
- Serve immediately, garnished with chopped parsley and basil. If desired, sprinkle with nutritional yeast or grated Parmesan cheese for added depth.
And there you have it! A classic Sunday sauce recipe with a refreshing twist thanks to Brooklyn Peltz Beckham. Enjoy your saucey meal!
By the way, scientists also recently created the world's thinnest pasta. Might want to give that one a try too, just for kicks.
Cotter also mentioned that they've updated the packaging for the Al Bronzo line, highlighting the texture of bronze-cut pasta that holds sauce impressively. The lineup also includes new shapes like Orecchiette and Fusilloni, which are highly sought after, according to a global survey by Nielsen.
"With the extraordinary grip of Al Bronzo pasta, it's not possible to achieve the scarpetta technique without dissolving the pasta," Cotter said. "We call it 'the pasta for sauce lovers.'"
Barilla collaborates with chefs in both the U.S. and Italy on the Al Bronzo line, which is made in Italy. "Al Bronzo is made in Italy, and that's crucial because we have deep roots in Parma," Cotter said. "We remain dedicated to a cherished Italian way of pasta-making after 148 years." Happy pasta-ing!
