Music Composer Monchi: Perceptions of me as aligned with the leftist movement should be reconsidered - Refrain from perceiving me as a member of the progressive circle.
Frontman of Punk Band Feine Sahne Fischfilet, Jan "Monchi" Gorkow, Steps Away from Leftist Label
Jan Gorkow, vocalist of the German punk band Feine Sahne Fischfilet, has recalibrated his political stance, distancing himself from the leftist scene. In an interview with the German Press Agency about his band's new album, he expressed his disconnect from the label: "I don't see myself as part of the left scene."
Gorkow, once entrenched in the ultra circles of Hansa Rostock football club, acknowledged the constraints of these categorical boxes. "Whether it's football or scenes, these labels are always too restrictive for me, and I've come to realize I don't quite fit in," he explained.
The 16-year-old Monchi, according to his own admission, would not have connected with the left. He felt stifled by what he perceived as an overly idealized, overly polite, and overly censored left. Instead, he identifies as a humanist, advocating for clear boundaries against racist and homophobic remarks, but declining to pursue moral crusades.
Feine Sahne Fischfilet has long been a vocal opponent of right-wing extremism and has suffered repeated attacks from the right. Simultaneously, the band has been classified as a left-wing extremist by certain constitutional protection reports from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, a classification they have challenged in court.
Monchi expressed dismay at the success of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. In his hometown of Jarmen, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the AfD garnered 54 percent of the second-vote tallies. "While I understand the disillusionment of people who feel neglected by mainstream democratic parties in recent years, I find nationalists of this sort unbearable," he stated.
In his encounters with those promoting right-wing ideologies, Monchi often finds himself a target due to his high-profile standing. He questioned the motives of urban residents who project their views upon him: "What do people from Kreuzberg want to tell me? They shout out slogans, but they don't even understand what right-wing extremism is."
Jan Gorkow's political journey has been intertwined with his personal growth and Feine Sahne Fischfilet's evolution as a band. Born in rural Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, he was initially involved in hooligan and ultra circles and had brushes with the law. He dropped out of school before his final exams and embarked on a rebellious path. However, upon joining Feine Sahne Fischfilet as their lead singer, he channeled his energy into music and a left-leaning, antifascist message, becoming a key figure in the band's political activism.
Throughout his career, Monchi's stance on extremism has remained steadfastly anti-right and antifascist, both in his public statements and through the band's lyrics and activism. Although the band has faced accusations of left-extremism and been monitored by authorities, they have consistently advocated for tolerance, social justice, and an unequivocal rejection of right-wing extremism. Monchi's imposing presence and outspokenness have secured his reputation as a leftist icon in the German music scene.
