Referees under scrutiny due to VAR decisions - Nagelsmann expresses dissatisfaction - Referee's reliance on VAR prompts heated protest from Nagelsmann
Germany's coach, Julian Nagelsmann, unleashed a furious tirade against referee Ivan Kruzliak following the Nation's League match against France, branding the official's VAR usage as a "blatant rule violation."
After Germany's crushing 0:2 defeat in the third-place match, a visibly annoyed Nagelsmann pointed out a clash between Niclas Füllkrug and Adrien Rabiot as a significant grievance. Although Deniz Undav managed to score the equalizer, the goal was disallowed following a lengthy VAR review, with the Slovakian referee ruling against Germany.
"This isn't what VAR is for. Kruzliak has a tremendous view, it's not a questionable decision. VAR's not designed for these instances," Nagelsmann vented[1][5].
Nagelsmann Offers Empathy to the Ref
At half-time, the controversial coach expressed sympathy for Kruzliak amidst such high-pressure situations. France clinched the victory with goals from superstar Kylian Mbappé (45') and Michael Olise (84'), while Germany's Marc-André ter Stegen put up a sterling display in goal to prevent further damage, with 51,313 spectators cheering them on[2][4].
Prior to this match, Germany lost their semifinal in Munich 1:2 against Portugal on Wednesday. Nevertheless, this was their inaugural venture into the final-four tournament in the competition's fourth edition. France, champions in the previous season, suffered an embarrassing 4:5 defeat against Spain in this year's semifinals[3].
