"Reema Kagti discusses the inevitable aspect of sequels and the shifting trends in Indian cinema, asserting that refusal is not an option"

Reema Kagti, one of India's most prominent filmmakers, celebrates the first anniversary of her project, Superboys of Malegaon. The response to the documentary has been nothing short of tremendous, garnering both domestic and international acclaim.

Kagti's partnership with her collaborators has been instrumental in deciphering her ideas and bringing them to life on paper. Their differences complement each other, making their collaboration effective. This partnership has been on display in various projects, including the critically acclaimed TV series, Dahaad, which is set to return with a sequel, Dahaad 2, featuring the same cast and exploring another criminal case in Indian society.

Dahaad 2 isn't the only project on the horizon for Kagti. Upcoming projects include a documentary titled Turtle Walker, several feature film scripts in development, and potential sequels for iconic movies like Dil Dhadakne Do and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara.

The creative process for Kagti's projects often begins with a germ of an idea, rooted in Indian culture. Her movies are relatable, relevant, and reflect the world around her, drawing inspiration from real-life incidents.

Kagti's focus is not just on feature films but also on TV+ shows. With OTT platforms shifting their focus from competing with feature films to creating TV+ shows, Kagti is poised to make her mark in this new landscape.

One of her recent projects, In Transit, was born during research for another project, Made in Heaven 2. This documentary series features real people sharing their lived experiences, a format believed to be more effective than fiction in bringing about a change of mindset in society.

Sonakshi Sinha is hoped to be part of Dahaad 2, but as of now, there is no official information about the continuation of the TV series, including details about the cast or production status.

Kagti's work has been recognised globally, with recent wins by Indian filmmakers at Cannes and Venice. However, she remains pragmatic about the prospect of winning an Oscar, viewing it as a lottery. Nevertheless, she hopes that Superboys of Malegaon will be considered as one of India's strongest Oscar contenders.

As the world changes rapidly, with increased competition from different screens and AI, Kagti is trying to equip herself for the future. She continues to push boundaries and challenge norms, ensuring that her work remains fresh, relevant, and engaging.
