Right-Wing Crimes in Brandenburg: A Mixed Bag of Hate and Unrest

Decline in reported crimes targeted at refugees so far - Reduction noted in crimes targeting refugees thus far

Hey there! Here's the lowdown on the crimes committed against refugees and refugee accommodations in Brandenburg. In a refreshing shift, the number of incidents dropped significantly in the first quarter of 2025, according to SPD state parliamentarian Andreas Noack, who cited state government data. From January to March, only 42 offenses were recorded, a dramatic decrease from the same period in 2024 that saw a staggering 87 crimes.

These offenses primarily consist of insults, threats, propaganda, property damage, arson, and physical assaults.

Andreas Noack, the MP in question, added, "While the numbers might've gone down, every single act still infringes upon human rights outrageously." It's important to note that Brandenburg has welcomed much fewer refugees compared to the previous year, which could be a factor in the reduced crime count.

Right-Wing Crimes on the Rise

Noack also expressed his concern over the total number of right-wing motivated crimes recorded in the first quarter of 2025. According to a government response to a minor inquiry, a total of 796 crimes were flagged under the "Politically motivated crime - right" category.

The majority of these offenses revolve around the dissemination and use of propaganda materials and symbols of unconstitutional and terrorist organizations. Offenses like incitement and insults also pop up frequently.

A total of 19 violent crimes with a right-wing motivation were registered in the first quarter, and the Federal Prosecutor General launched an investigation into a suspected right-wing extremist terrorist cell, with Altdöbern in the Oberspreewald-Lausitz district being a crime scene.

Some examples of hate-fueled actions include an anti-Semitic incident in Oranienburg (Oberhavel), where a man wearing a kippa was shoved to the ground. In Bad Saarow (Oder-Spree district), two individuals allegedly attacked a dark-skinned man's head against the glass of a bus stop in January. In March, unknown assailants pelted the alternative youth club in Senftenberg (Oberspreewald-Lausitz district) with stones.

A Growing Problem

MP Noack emphasized that recent hate-filled incidents suggest a worrying resurgence in intolerance. In the eastern Brandenburg town of Bad Freienwalde, a group of masked individuals viciously attacked a demonstration against the far-right. According to Noack, "Brandenburg must remain a safe space for all, irrespective of origin, skin color, or support for refugees. This includes distancing ourselves from extreme right-wing forces in the political sphere."

While the final tally might not paint an utterly bleak picture, the first quarter statistics are still a glaring reminder that intolerance and violence remain deeply rooted challenges in Brandenburg. As a society, continued vigilance and decisive action will be key to reducing and eventually eliminating these hate crimes. Stay woke, folks! 🚀

  1. The rise in right-wing motivated crimes, as confirmed by state government data, is a concerning development in Brandenburg's general-news landscape, particularly in the categories of propaganda dissemination, incitement, and violent crimes.
  2. Although the number of hate crimes against refugees and refugee accommodations decreased in the first quarter of 2025, the community's policy makers, like MP Andreas Noack, are urging vigilance and decisive action, emphasizing that a single act of intolerance or violence against any individual infringes upon human rights outrageously.
