Reduced Suspension for Horvat Following Alleged Misconduct

Croatian Handball Player Ivan Horvat Reduced to One-Year Suspension

The three-year ban handed to Ivan Horvat, the Croatian backcourt player for ALPLA HC Hard, over a controversial foul has been partially revoked by the appeals court of the ÖHB. Initially sentenced to suspension until June 30, 2027, the court's ruling reduces the sanction to 12 months and 6 days, effective until April 30, 2026.

The Original Foul and Controversy

The incident took place during a match between Hard and Bregenz in the Austrian League. Horvat had fouled Bregenz's Markus Mahr with such force that Mahr suffered multiple nasal bone fractures. Despite extensive criticism, an independent handball court of the ÖHB deemed his action a gross display of unacceptable sports conduct and initially imposed the heavy penalty.

Reduced Suspension

Following an appeal, the suspension has been reduced to one year, with the remaining 15 months suspended conditionally for a two-year period. This means Horvat's suspension officially ends in October 2025, allowing him to compete starting November 1, 2021, in all competitions. It is essential to note that Horvat previously played in the Bundesliga, but the current suspension is related to his involvement in the Austrian league.
