Redskins' team owner Josh Harris announces: No revival of the old Redskins name with the new stadium; looking forward, not backward.
Fresh Take:
Josh Harris, Washington Commanders Managing Partner, Talks Upcoming Return to RFK Stadium
In a candid chat on "Special Report," Commanders owner Josh Harris discussed plans to bring the team back to Washington, D.C., by 2030.
Harris, known for his aggressive and forward-thinking approach, is aligned with the Commanders' new identity – the Commanders. With a hint of nostalgia, the team announced their agreement to build a modern stadium on the old RFK Stadium site. The announcement featured Super Bowl-winning quarterback Joe Theismann narrating the video.
However, the name Redskins won't be making a comeback, as Harris clarified on "Special Report." He explained how the Commanders name has taken on a unique significance within the team, with players earning the title based on their grit and love for football. The militaristic city's large number of military personnel has further ascertained the name's synergy.
Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser, in partnership with Commanders executives, has reached a deal to return to the RFK Stadium site. This deal, subject to DC City Council approval, may see the cherished Redskins logo resurrected, with Congressional support. Sen. Steve Daines, R-Mont., believes good faith negotiations between the NFL and the Commanders will facilitate the use of the logo once more.
A much-anticipated stadium, the project includes a 65,000-seat stadium, housing, parks, hotels, restaurants, retail, and a sportsplex across 170 acres. The overall cost of the project is estimated to be about $3.6 billion to $4 billion, with the Commanders contributing at least $2.7 billion and DC investing nearly $1.1 billion.
The groundbreaking for construction is anticipated to start in 2027, with an opening day set for 2030. Baier also asked if RFK Stadium would retain its name, and Harris replied that while efforts will be made to honor their past, the name remains to be announced.
Stay tuned for updates on this exciting chapter for the Commanders in the nation's capital!
