RedCorps pitcher Hunter Greene posts six shutout innings in his comeback from a groin problem
Hunter Greene Returns to Cincinnati's Rotation after Groin Injury
After a challenging two-month stint on the injured list due to a right groin strain, Cincinnati Reds' promising pitcher Hunter Greene made his return to the rotation on Wednesday night. The 24-year-old, who was selected with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2017 amateur draft, had previously been sidelined for two weeks in May with the same injury.
Before the injury, Greene was in impressive form, boasting a 4-3 record, 2.72 ERA, and 73 strikeouts in nearly 60 innings over 11 starts. His return is seen as crucial for the Reds, who are fighting for position in the National League wild-card standings and are heading into a big weekend series against the major league-leading Milwaukee Brewers.
To make room for Greene on the roster, right-hander Sam Benschoter was optioned to Triple-A Louisville. Greene's first post-injury start was the finale of a three-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies on August 13, where he performed admirably. He struck out key hitters like Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper in a perfect first inning and ended the sixth inning by striking out Harper swinging for the final out.
In total, Greene allowed three hits in his first major league start in over two months, pitching six innings in an 8-0 victory over Philadelphia. He threw 85 pitches, with 58 being strikes. As the Reds continue their pursuit of a playoff spot, Greene's health and performance will undoubtedly play a significant role in their rotation.
However, there are no confirmed upcoming Greene starts against the Brewers reported as of August 23. The Reds' schedule will be closely watched to see when Greene might face off against Milwaukee in the near future.
