Unveiling Intimacy: "Max & Joy - Come Closer" Delves into the Lives of Music Pioneers

Relocated Event for the Musical Documentary Debut - Redcfaring Musical Chronicle's Relocated Debut

On a bustling Berlin evening (7th May), close to 200 guests gathered for the premiere of Joy Denalane's three-part ARD documentary, "Max & Joy - Come Closer," at the Astor Film Lounge. Despite the absence of Max Herre, the focal point of the documentary, the event echoed with anticipation and camaraderie.

As Joy Denalane, 51, reflected on the making of the documentary, she encapsulated the experience as "exciting, surprising, moving, sometimes even delicate." Delving into her past, rekindling conversations, and resurrecting shared memories made for an introspective journey that left an indelible mark.

A Journey into the Heart of German Music

The docuseries offers a personal and unfiltered glimpse into the lives of Joy Denalane and Max Herre, two German musical icons who have reshaped the local music scene for over 25 years. With their highs and lows, triumphs and tribulations, their love story mirrors the evolution of hip-hop, soul, and R&B in Germany.

The series, directed by their longtime friend Sékou Neblett, 53, sheds light on the couple's shared musical journey, their successes, and their private moments such as the birth of their children, their wedding, their temporary separation, and their reunion.

Neblett, a former member of the band Freundeskreis (1996-2007), later turned screenwriter and documentary filmmaker, was inspired to narrate the story of his friends Max & Joy. "We've been friends with Sékou Neblett for over 25 years," Max Herre shared. "Sékou's perspective seemed captivating, and we felt it was worth sharing."

The docuseries also chronicles the creation of their debut joint album "Alles Liebe," which debuted at number 5 on the album charts upon its release in November 2024.

Celebrating a Milestone in Berlin

The Berlin premiere was graced by companions, friends, family members, and notable guests. Among the attendees were Jannik Schümann, Lamin Leroy Gibba, Anna Dushime, Hadnet Tesfai, Jenny Augusta, Marie Nasemann, Marwa Eldessouky, and Frank Delle.

Kristian Costa-Zahn, program director of ARD culture, highlighted the significance of the docuseries, stating, "Max & Joy - Come Closer is another chapter in the history of German music. Joy Denalane and Max Herre have left an indelible mark on the music landscape like no other."

Post-premiere, Joy Denalane moved her audience with performances of "Im Ghetto von Soweto (Auntie's House)," "Was och immer," and "Bisschen mehr als Freundschaft." A snippet of her emotional performance can be found in an Instagram story, and she took a moment to explain Max Herre's absence due to illness: "My Maxi was unwell, so I took his spot."
