Italian Footballer Sandro Tonali Serves 10-Month Suspension for Betting on Matches

Sandro Tonali, a 23-year-old Italian footballer, is currently serving a 10-month suspension from football due to betting on matches he was involved in. The ban, which started in 2024, has kept Tonali out of games like FC 24 and continued into at least the early part of the 2024/25 season.

This suspension is longer than the one received by fellow Italian footballer Nicolo Fagioli, who was sentenced to a 7-month suspension for similar betting offenses in 2023. Both cases are part of a wider crackdown in sports on gambling-related misconduct.

Tonali's case is unique in that he did not report himself to the authorities, unlike Fagioli. However, Tonali has since admitted to suffering from a gambling addiction and is cooperating with the authorities. His lawyers are using his cooperation and efforts to seek help as arguments to keep the penalty as low as possible.

In a game against Crystal Palace, Tonali was substituted in by his coach Eddie Howe, 45. The substitution was met with a standing ovation and minutes of applause from the fans, who have shown their support for Tonali. Newcastle United went on to win the game 4-0.

Meanwhile, Nicola Zalewski, 21, and Nicolo Barella, 26, have also been unfairly accused of sports betting. Zalewski's accuser, Fabrizio Corona, is a former paparazzo. Both Barella and Zalewski have denied any involvement in betting on football matches. An informant who leaked Barella's name has since apologized.

In a separate incident, Zalewski has threatened to sue Corona, who has since apologized.

This is a developing story and the media expects that the penalty for Sandro Tonali will be announced in the coming days.

What about Tonali's punishment in the general-news and crime-and-justice sector is that it's longer than Fagioli's, both being footballers in Europe's leagues, with Tonali serving a 10-month suspension starting in 2024, while Fagioli received a 7-month ban in 2023? Also, in sports updates, there are allegations of betting on matches against Nicola Zalewski and Nicolo Barella, but both have denied these claims.
