New York Red Bulls Secure Midfield Reinforcement with Gustav Berggren's Signing
After weeks of anticipation, Swedish midfielder Gustav Berggren officially signed a 3.5-year deal with the New York Red Bulls on July 23, 2025. However, his arrival at the club has been delayed due to visa issues.
Berggren, who was awarded team MVP honors in the 2024 season with his previous club RKS Raków, has been eagerly awaited as a key addition to New York’s midfield, replacing Felipe Carballo who left after his loan ended.
During his tenure with RKS Raków, Berggren made 105 appearances, scoring five goals and providing seven assists. He also played a pivotal role in helping the team win the league title in the 2022-23 season.
Despite the delay, there are no holdups in the visa process, according to a source. The Red Bulls are waiting for the P-1 visa of their new signing to be approved. The visa approval finally came through on August 21, 2025.
With his visa now approved, Berggren is expected to join his new team soon and potentially make his MLS debut against Charlotte FC in North Carolina on Sunday, August 24, 2025.
Meanwhile, the MLS transfer window closes on Aug. 21, and the Red Bulls are also in talks with former German international Timo Werner.
Elsewhere in the league, Tottenham Hotspur legend Son Heung-min made his debut for LAFC on Sunday night, while LAFC officially signed the South Korean international on Wednesday.
As of Monday, there is no estimated timetable for when Berggren's visa issue will be resolved, but the Red Bulls are hopeful that he will be able to join the team soon and make a significant impact on the pitch.
