New York Red Bulls Bolster Midfield with Gustav Berggren Signing

The New York Red Bulls have strengthened their squad for the upcoming season with the signing of Swedish midfielder Gustav Berggren. The 27-year-old joins Emil Forsberg, another Swede, on the Red Bulls roster, as the team aims to make the postseason for a league-record 16th consecutive time.

Berggren, who played for RKS Raków Częstochowa in Poland, has signed a 3 1/2-year deal through 2028 with an option for 2029. The deal is reported to be worth around $2.1 million.

The Red Bulls head coach, Sandro Schwarz, is pleased to have Berggren on the team. "Gustav is a great addition to our midfield," Schwarz said. "He has a strong work ethic and a keen eye for creating opportunities. I am confident that he will be a valuable asset to our team."

Berggren started in all 32 league matches he played for Raków Częstochowa, scoring five goals and seven assists. During the 2024-25 season, he recorded two goals and five assists.

Jochen Schneider, the Red Bulls head of sport, is excited about the addition of Berggren. "Gustav is a talented player with a lot of potential," Schneider said. "We believe that he will help us to compete at the highest level and challenge for silverware."

The Red Bulls are currently holding the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Last season, they reached the MLS Cup final for the first time since 2008, but were defeated by the Portland Timbers. Despite consistent playoff appearances, the Red Bulls have not won the MLS Cup since 2008.

The departure of Felipe Carballo, who returned to his club in Brazil after his loan expired, has left a gap in the midfield. Berggren's arrival is expected to fill that void and strengthen the Red Bulls' midfield for the upcoming season.

The name of the other Swedish player who will play for the New York Red Bulls in the 2025/26 season is not yet available. The Red Bulls are yet to announce the financial details of Berggren's contract, other than the reported $2.1 million.

As the Red Bulls prepare for the new season, the addition of Gustav Berggren is a welcome boost for the team. With his impressive track record and potential, Berggren is set to play a key role in the Red Bulls' bid to win the MLS Cup and break the league's postseason record.
