Red Bull narrowly avoids a massive Giro disaster, thanks to Nico Denz's timely intervention.
Cycling: Nico Denz Secures Emotional Triumph in Third Giro Stage Victory at Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe
German rider Nico Denz claimed a momentous solo win on the 18th stage of the 108th Giro d'Italia, marking the first victory for his Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe team in the prestigious race. The 144-kilometer trek from Morbegno to Cesano Maderno saw Denz triumph with a 61-second lead over Mirco Maesti and Edward Planckaert.
The triumph came amidst a challenging tour for Denz's team, which had already suffered the withdrawals of co-favorites Primoz Roglic and Jai Hindley. Speaking about his emotional victory, Denz stated, "This is perhaps the most emotional victory after losing Jai and Primoz. All in the team had this big goal to win the Giro with Primoz Roglic. When you lose a leader like Primoz, a dream bursts. It feels like all the hard work was for nothing. Fortunately, we turned it around and motivated ourselves."
A large group of riders had broken away early in the stage, with sprinters like Mads Pedersen and Wout van Aert eventually being dropped. The race favorite Isaac del Toro and the rest of the main peloton finished an impressive 14 minutes behind.
The stage victory, as well as paving a path for his team, was a testament to Denz's tenacity, agility, and strategic acumen. Former Roubaix champion John Degenkolb praised Denz, "This wasn't just a victory of the legs, but a victory of the mind. He's a super cool guy, he deserves it."
With the next battle in the mountains set for Friday's 19th stage, all eyes will be on the 21-year-old del Toro, who showcased impressive comeback qualities in his first stage win on Wednesday.
