Red Bull's Struggle to Keep Up in Formula 1's 2025 Season

Red Bull faces potential suspension warning

Barcelona (dpa) - Max Verstappen's impressive outburst of anger following a crash in Barcelona has cast a shadow over the Formula 1 World Championship. The championship threatens to become a pure McLaren duel, with the Red Bull driver falling behind early on. Disappointingly for Verstappen, a potentially winning strategy came undone in a thrilling final phase, resulting in a penalty and a tenth-place finish. He also received three penalty points, increasing his total to eleven, risking a suspension for a Grand Prix.

When quizzed about whether his maneuver against George Russell in the Mercedes was intentional, Verstappen defiantly replied, "Who cares?" The F1 superstar maintained that the slower Mercedes couldn't challenge for the title. "It was a pulsating atmosphere," Red Bull's motorsport advisor Helmut Marko remarked. "There's already a certain frustration expressing itself in Verstappen's driving style." However, Verstappen was guarded with his comments after the incident, deciding against assigning blame. The situation for the Red Bull team remains serious given the potential loss of both the constructors' and drivers' championships to McLaren.

In the exhilarating final phase, Verstappen's Red Bull collided with George Russell's Mercedes, earning him a penalty. He plummeted to a completely disappointing tenth place. Verstappen was unusually tight-lipped following the incident: "It's a shame about the safety car, because I only had hard tires left, they didn't work. I had no traction. Up until then it was a positive race, I was aiming for a third place," stated Verstappen to RTL.

Meanwhile, race winner Oscar Piastri extended his lead, securing his fifth win in the ninth season race. Team colleague Lando Norris couldn't challenge the Australian, a week after his triumph in Monaco. "I can't complain, it's been a great year so far and this weekend was exactly what I wanted," said Piastri.

Charles Leclerc finished third in the Ferrari, with no penalty imposed after a maneuver against Verstappen. Nico Hülkenberg delivered a spectacular fifth-place finish in the Sauber, even leaving record champion Lewis Hamilton in the Ferrari behind after a stunning overtaking maneuver.

Struggling Verstappen Loses Ground to McLaren

Despite a strong start, Verstappen was unable to pose a serious threat to Piastri, having already won four of the eight Grand Prix up to the Spain race. Piastri, Norris, and McLaren appear to be the stars of the 2025 season, with Verstappen struggling to keep up. A tightening of the rules regarding front wings seems to be impacting the Dutch driver, allowing McLaren to gain an advantage. Some, including seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton of Ferrari, have criticized the new rule as a pointless expenditure: "Nothing has changed."

Following the incident, Piastri leads the championship with 186 points, leaving Norris 10 points behind. Verstappen, with his dismal finish in Spain, has lost significant ground, dropping to 137 points, 49 points behind Piastri.
