Recued Third Victim Discovered Following Helicopter Crash in Grimma

A German military helicopter crashed near Grimma, Saxony, on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, during a training flight. Initially, two crew members were confirmed dead, and a third was missing. As of August 1, 2025, the third crew member's body was recovered, confirming all three crew members died in the crash.

The helicopter involved was an EC-135, leased and used by the German Air Force’s Helicopter Squadron 64 for training purposes. The crash occurred into the Mulde river near Grimma for reasons still unknown.

Rescue operations included over 100 emergency personnel, including police divers, conducting extensive searches. A boom was deployed in the river to contain kerosene leaking from the wreckage. A Eurofighter aircraft was also involved in the rescue efforts.

Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) issued a statement expressing deep condolences for the loss, confirming that the deceased were experienced crew members. He emphasized that everything possible would be done to investigate the circumstances of the crash and offered sympathy to the families and the armed forces affected by the tragedy.

Currently, the crash site in the Mulde river remains under investigation, with rescue and recovery operations concluded after the retrieval of the third crew member. The focus has shifted now to determining the cause of the crash.

Minister Pistorius has requested discretion and restraint at the crash site to ensure uninterrupted work of the deployment forces. His request for restraint is still in effect.

The victims of the crash were identified as one soldier and two soldiers who lost their lives in the helicopter crash in Grimma, Saxony. Our thoughts and condolences are with their families and loved ones during this difficult time.

Meanwhile, the Federal Defense Minister has also announced plans for a tougher fight against tax evasion, while the SPD is considering recognition of a Palestinian State.
