Recovery efforts for the deceased German Olympian in Pakistan have been discontinued by authorities.
In a tragic turn of events, the recovery attempt for German Olympic biathlete, Laura Dahlmeier, has been abandoned due to severe and persistent bad weather conditions. The accident occurred on Laila Peak in Pakistan’s Karakoram range on 28 July at approximately 5,700 meters (18,700 feet).
During her climb, Dahlmeier was struck by a rockfall that left her injured and stranded on the mountainside. Her climbing partner, Marina Eva, issued a distress call and was able to reach base camp with rescuers' help. However, Dahlmeier remained stranded.
Rescue helicopters could not reach the scene due to poor weather, and the high risk of falling rocks made a ground rescue equally dangerous. A recovery operation was launched but eventually called off on the evening of 29 July after assessing the risk and the severity of the situation.
The decision was based on the combined challenges of the remote location, dangerous terrain, and adverse weather that made any recovery attempt unsafe and impractical. The authorities have since abandoned efforts to recover her body due to the hazardous conditions at the site.
Marina Krauss, Dahlmeier's climbing partner, described the incident at a press conference, stating that Dahlmeier did not move after being hit by a rockfall. Krauss explained that she was unable to reach Dahlmeier and called for outside support.
Laura Dahlmeier, a seven-time world championship gold medallist, retired from professional competition in 2019 at the age of 25. Her colleagues confirmed that she did not want her body recovered if it put any would-be rescuers at risk.
American Jackson Marvell, a member of the rescue team, stated that recovering Dahlmeier's body against her wishes would be disrespectful. A rescue team, which included German mountaineer Thomas Huber, had attempted a rescue but decided to leave her body at the site due to her wishes.
At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, Dahlmeier became the first woman biathlete to win both the sprint and the pursuit at the same Games. Dahlmeier's management agency stated that her relatives will continue to monitor the situation and may arrange a rescue at a later date.
