Manchester United Secures Benjamin Sesko in €85 Million Deal
Manchester United have bolstered their attacking options with the signing of Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig. The Slovenian striker, often compared to striker sensation Erling Haaland, has joined the Red Devils on a long-term contract until 2030.
The transfer fee for Sesko is reportedly €85 million, with additional €10 million in achievable add-ons, making it the second most expensive sale by RB Leipzig, surpassed only by Josko Gvardiol, who was sold to Manchester City for a reported €91.5 million in 2023.
The bidding war between Manchester United and Newcastle United drove up the purchase price for Sesko. The initial guaranteed fee was about €75 million, with an additional €10 million in achievable add-ons contributing to the total €85 million figure.
In addition to the transfer fee, the deal includes a sell-on clause for RB Leipzig to receive a percentage from any future transfer fee, and a friendly match is planned between the two clubs as part of the agreement.
Sporting director Marcel Schäfer of Leipzig stated that economic conditions played a role in the transfer, with the club determined to ensure that their top striker was not sold for less than 80 million euros after a disappointing previous season.
During his time at Leipzig, Sesko was successful six times in the Champions League and the DFB-Pokal, scoring 27 goals in 64 Bundesliga games and assisting in seven more. The 20-year-old striker will now look to replicate his form in the Premier League, where he will join a star-studded Manchester United squad.
Meanwhile, Newcastle United, who also competed for Sesko's services, will play internationally next season, including in the Champions League. The Magpies will be hoping to build on their impressive form this season and challenge for honours in the upcoming campaign.
