Recorded daily homicides reach a 2016 low, as Tuesday's evening news sums up.
Mexico Sees Significant Drop in Homicide Rate, According to President Sheinbaum
In a recent press conference, President Claudia Sheinbaum announced a substantial reduction in Mexico's homicide rate. The decline, which amounts to 25.3% over a ten-month period between September 2024 and July 2025, has been attributed to coordinated enforcement actions against organized crime.
According to Sheinbaum, these measures include the arrest of key criminal figures, increased intelligence sharing, enhanced police capabilities, and efforts such as gun buyback programs. Additionally, improved cooperation with the U.S. on narcotics enforcement and border security has played a significant role in this reduction.
The decline in homicides has been observed across the country. Mexico City, previously ranked as the 12th most violent entity, now has 508 homicides between January and July 2025, accounting for 3.3% of the total. Guerrero and México state account for 5.9% and 6.6% of the total homicides respectively. On the other hand, eight states recorded 100 homicides or fewer, including Yucatán, Durango, Coahuila, Aguascalientes, Tlaxcala, Campeche, Baja California Sur, and Querétaro.
Notably, Guanajuato leads the country with 1,761 homicides between January and July 2025, accounting for 11.9% of the national total. The arrest of a number of "generators of violence" in March has been linked to the decline in murders in Guanajuato.
Sheinbaum emphasized that this reduction is a "very important result" of the national security strategy, which has four key pillars: attention to the root causes of crime, strengthening of the National Guard, strengthening of intelligence and investigation practices, and enhanced coordination between governments of different levels.
Other successes reported by Sheinbaum include the dismantling of 1,262 methamphetamine laboratories across 21 states and the seizure of 14,943 firearms and over 216 tonnes of drugs since she took office.
The average number of daily homicides in Mexico between January and July 2025 was 69.7, a reduction from the 95.1 average in the same period in 2024. In July 2025, the average number of daily homicides was 64.9, a further reduction of 25.3% compared to September 2024, the final month of former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador's term.
Sheinbaum emphasized the need to continue working to maintain the reduction in homicides, highlighting the importance of the multi-pronged security strategy. This strategy involves targeting criminal groups, strengthening coordination among law enforcement agencies, deploying the National Guard, implementing gun buyback programs, collaborating with the U.S. to reduce fentanyl trafficking, and more.
