Sportfreunde Siegen: A Rising Star in the Regionalliga West

The city of Siegen is making significant strides in modernizing the old Leimbach stadium, home to the local football club, Sportfreunde Siegen. With a seating capacity of 18,500 spectators, the stadium is preparing for a new era as the Sportfreunde aim to establish themselves firmly within the Regionalliga West, the fourth tier of German football.

After narrowly avoiding relegation in the 2022/23 season, the Sportfreunde are currently competing competitively, positioned around third place in the league table. Their recent notable wins include a victory over SV Rödinghausen and a draw against Borussia Dortmund II U23.

The club's resurgence is closely linked to the efforts of Matthias Georg, the managing director, and the team around trainer Thorsten Nehrbauer. Key players like Cagatay Kader and Arif Güclü have stayed with the club, contributing to the team's solid performance.

In an effort to maintain competitive form, the Sportfreunde have made several strategic moves. New signings include promising striker Josue Santo and goalkeeper Justin Ospelt, while Hamza Saghiri, Dennis Brock, and David Kammerbauer have made it directly into the starting lineup. The club has also applied for grant funds to build a video analysis room and has equipped the physiotherapists with their own equipment.

The Sportfreunde are supported by local sponsors such as the Irle brewery, which was the shirt sponsor in the 1980s. The hype around the club is big, with more than 3,000 spectators expected for an upcoming game. The average attendance at Sportfreunde games has increased from 800 to 2400, and the number of sponsors has doubled.

The club's recent game against Borussia Dortmund II was a thrilling encounter, with the Sportfreunde drawing 2:2 despite being a man down and losing Malik Hodroj to a red card. Jubes Mba Tibah Ticha scored the equalizing goal for the Sportfreunde in the 95th minute.

Looking ahead, the Sportfreunde are planning major renovation works for the stadium, including covering the away stand. The city is also supposed to help with the realization of a turf heating system for the stadium. The stadium has already undergone significant renovations, with new seating, a new toilet and ticket office building, and many smaller renovation works.

Despite their rich history, which includes titles won in the 1920s and 1950s, the Sportfreunde have struggled in the lower leagues in recent years. However, under the leadership of Georg and Nehrbauer, they are breathing the air of big football once again. Upcoming fixtures include matches against teams such as FC Schalke 04 II U23, which suggest an active campaign to maintain momentum during the 2025 season.
