Snowstorm Hits Perm: A 24-Hour Blizzard in April

Mark your calendars! April 28, 2021, was an unusual date for Perm, Russia. That's when a heavy snowstorm unleashed its fury, starting at 06:30 local time and lasting approximately 24 hours. Yes, you read that right – no April showers here, just a winter wonderland!

Initially, meteorologists forecasted a multi-day snowstorm, with up to 35 mm of precipitation expected. However, it turned out to be more intense than predicted, leaving many stations with snow depth reaching over 30 cm.

Perm saw 32 mm of precipitation, which is 88% of the monthly norm, surpassing the last comparable snowfall on April 27-28, 2010. The snow depth in Perm reached a whopping 33 cm, while neighboring Lysva topped it at 37 cm. Kungur, Osa, Nozhivka, and Gubakha were not far behind, with snow depths of 30 cm, 29 cm, 29 cm, and 28 cm respectively. But were these snowfall numbers the highest recorded in Perm's history? Meteorologists are still investigating that question.

The snowstorm was accompanied by compelling winds of up to 20 m/s and a storm warning, causing a frenzy on the roads. 9-10 level traffic jams, public transport disruptions, and numerous traffic accidents became common sights. Communal services battled the cold, using over 200 tons of de-icing materials to keep the roads clear.

Moreover, the Perm International Airport operations were temporarily suspended for 18 hours, and visibility at the weather station decreased to 300 m. Brrr!
