Record-breaking second-highest sale for a right back:
Manchester United Secures Sesko in Record-Breaking €90 Million Deal
Manchester United has announced the acquisition of Slovenian striker Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig in a transfer deal worth an estimated €90 million. The fee, which includes performance-related bonuses, surpasses the previous record set by the sale of Croatian defender Josko Gvardiol to Manchester City in 2023.
The bidding war for Sesko's services drove up the purchase price, with Manchester United's offer of €85 million, consisting of €75 million upfront and €10 million in performance-related bonuses, outdoing Newcastle United's reported bid of around €80 million. Sesko, who had been compared to striker star Erling Haaland, was not interested in joining Newcastle, which will play internationally in the upcoming season, including the Champions League.
Sesko's departure from RB Leipzig was a decision made some time ago, and the German club was determined to sell him for at least €80 million. The 19-year-old striker, who joined RB Leipzig from RB Salzburg in 2023 for around €24 million, scored 27 goals in 64 Bundesliga games and contributed to seven other goals. He also scored six times in the DFB-Pokal and the Champions League.
In a statement, RB Leipzig's sporting director, Marcel Schäfer, acknowledged the economic aspect played a role in the transfer. Sesko has signed a long-term contract with Manchester United until 2030, making him a valuable addition to the Red Devils' squad.
With Sesko's arrival, Manchester United looks poised to strengthen its attack, as the club continues to compete in the Premier League and aims for further success in European competitions. Sesko's transfer fee of €90 million makes him the second most expensive sale by RB Leipzig, behind only Gvardiol, who was sold to Manchester City for a reported €91.5 million in 2023.
