Record-breaking Keeneland September Sale surpasses $500 million in total trading volume
Keeneland September Yearling Sale Breaks Records, Surpasses $500 Million in Salesforce
The Keeneland September Yearling Sale has made history, surpassing $500 million in cumulative through-the-ring salesforce for the first time. This impressive feat is a testament to the continued faith of breeders and consignors in the prestigious auction.
The sale, which concluded recently, saw a total of 2,373 yearlings sold, a slight increase from the 2,326 horses sold in the corresponding period last year. The total salesforce for this year are 23% above the figures from last year.
One of the highlights of the sale was a 'rare and exciting opportunity' to share in Not This Time's 2025 earnings. The colt, consigned by Ashview Farm, is a promising prospect with a strong pedigree. He is out of Honorable Memory, a winning daughter of Honor Code, and is from the family of Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile winner Furthest Land. His dam, Magical Holiday, is a winning daughter of Speightstown, and the colt is from the family of Grade 1 winner Mastery, Grade 2 winner Jump Start, and Japanese Group 3 winner Jasper Krone.
New buyers made a tangible impact at the sale, with Jamie Insole making his first Keeneland adventure with a timely purchase. Notable purchases included a filly bought by Jim and Susan Hill for $180,000, consigned by Brookdale, and a Liam's Map colt that was sold for a record price of $480,000, set in session ten. This colt was purchased by bloodstock agent Chad Schumer, acting as an agent for KGS Bloodstock.
The average price for a yearling at the sale was $210,801, a 21% rise from $174,342 in 2024. The median price also saw a 15% increase, reaching $120,000. Keeneland vice-president of sales Tony Lacy attributed this success to the confidence of breeders and consignors, stating that it is the foundation of these results.
Consignors such as KatieRich Farms and Ashview Farm continued to entrust their horses to Keeneland for the sale. A colt by Ghostzapper, consigned by KatieRich Farms, was purchased by Al Jawzaa General Trading for $200,000.
The Keeneland September Yearling Sale has once again proven to be a significant event in the horse racing industry, providing a platform for both seasoned and new buyers to invest in promising young horses. The sale's continued success is a reflection of the faith and confidence breeders and consignors have in Keeneland, making it a premier destination for yearling sales.
