Record-breaker Duplantis surpasses 20 feet [6.29 m] in pole vaulting competition
In an electrifying display of athletic prowess, Olympic champion Armand Duplantis, affectionately known as the "Mondo" nicknamed track and field star, has broken his own world record in the men's pole vault. The new record stands at an impressive 6.29 meters, a feat achieved on August 12, 2025, at the prestigious Istvan Gyulai Memorial in Budapest, Hungary.
This marks Duplantis' 13th world record in pole vault, surpassing his previous best of 6.28 meters set earlier in 2025. The Hungarian crowd erupted in cheers as Duplantis mastered the world record height on his second attempt, establishing a new world record and making history at the Gyulai Memorial.
The event was not just a triumph for Duplantis, but also a platform for other talented athletes. German athlete Simon Batz clinched the long jump event with a distance of 8.07 meters, surprising many as he surpassed Olympic and world champion Miltiadis Tentoglou from Greece. Bence Halasz, the Olympic silver medalist from Hungary, won the hammer throw event with a throw of 83.18 meters.
Ethan Katzberg, another Canadian athlete and Olympic and world champion, finished second in the hammer throw with a throw of 81.88 meters, while German hammer throw champion Merlin Hummel finished fourth with a throw of 79.01 meters.
Interestingly, Duplantis initially faced a hurdle in the meeting, failing to clear 5.62 meters. However, he regrouped and successfully cleared 6.11 meters before eventually setting the new world record. After the historic achievement, Duplantis celebrated with his fans and colleagues, basking in the joy of his accomplishment.
It's worth noting that Duplantis had previously set a world record of 6.27 meters at an indoor meeting in Clermont-Ferrand, France, on March 1, 2021. Furthermore, he had won the world championship in pole vault two years ago in Budapest.
As the World Athletics Championships approach in Tokyo one month from now, the athletic world eagerly awaits to see what more records Duplantis might break. The sporting community continues to marvel at the exceptional skills and determination of this remarkable athlete.
