Andreas Büttner, the Brandenburg Commissioner for Combating Antisemitism, is currently embroiled in a contentious situation as he faces potential expulsion from the far-left German Left Party. Nine members of the party have petitioned for his removal, citing his public support for Israel and alleged violations of party resolutions and international law[1][4].

Büttner's statements in favour of Israel have been met with harsh criticism on social media, where he has been labelled a "child killer" and "genocide denier"[1]. In response, he has emphasised the importance of addressing attacks against Jews in Brandenburg, rather than criticising the Israeli government, while acknowledging its mistakes[1][2].

The Left Party's stance in this dispute reflects an internal conflict over the Middle East, with Büttner's pro-Israel statements seen as a significant departure from the party line[1][4]. The party's May resolution clearly states its commitment to standing with oppressed peoples[3]. However, Büttner argues that party resolutions bind the party leadership, not individual members[5].

The request for Büttner's expulsion states that his statements not only violate existing party resolutions but also, in some cases, ignore international law[6]. As of the time of this article, Büttner has not responded to the call for his expulsion[7].

In a conversation with the German Press Agency, Büttner expressed concern about the implications of attacks on Jews in Brandenburg due to decisions made by the Israeli government[8]. He has also posted on the X portal, stating that recognising a state of Palestine would be the worst step one could take[4].

Despite the controversy, the Left Party has not taken any action towards expelling Büttner at the time of this article. The party's May resolution also opposes antisemitism[3]. The resolution, passed during the federal conference, also called for an end to the expulsion and famine in Gaza, and the implementation of international law[2].

  1. The ongoing dispute within the German Left Party over Büttner's expulsion is influenced by politics, including policy-and-legislation and general-news, particularly war-and-conflicts, as his support for Israel conflicts with the party's commitment to standing with oppressed peoples.
  2. Migration is another issue that could be affected by this situation, as Büttner's expulsion could potentially impact the party's approach to issues facing Jewish migrants in Brandenburg.
  3. Crime-and-justice also plays a role in this story, as allegations of violations of party rules and international law have been leveled against Büttner, which could lead to legal consequences within the party or beyond.
